i,m told i have severe arthritis in my knee. came on suddenly.i experience pain constantly. is this normal?

i’am 62. had surgery for meniscal tear in august05. i basically have the same pain now after the surgery that i did before. drs.say it’s arthritis. i thought arthritis pain was intermittent and varied in intensity. i exercise, do not take pain meds unless absolutely necessary. the pain is always there and i tend to favor the knee when walking. what experience do you all have with arthritis?
