I’m 17 years old and for as long as I can remember I have had chronic pain in my right hip. Usually twice a year on average I will get 1-2 week long episodes of excruciating hip pain, making it very difficult to walk or sit, and laying down is the worst. The only cause I can think of for this is that when I was in second grade I accidentally did the splits and had pain for three weeks, but it went away for years. It didn’t start up again until maybe two years ago, and it’s happened ever since. When the episodes happen, it’s hard to do even the simplest task. I have to take four ibuprofen pills just to make a dent in the pain. There is no history of arthritis or anything in my family. I had a doctor look at an x-ray of it, but he couldn’t find anything wrong. Then again, the x-ray was taken between episodes. If anyone has any idea about what it could be, please help. I’m 17 and too young to have to deal with this. I don’t want to have to deal with this the rest of my life!!!
I already went to multiple chiropractors multiple times. One said my pelvis was crooked. Another didn’t say anything. When I go get it adjusted it doesn’t help very well. And it’s a deep pain, almost as if its the joint. My most recent chiropractor thinks that the sac in the joint that cushions it is becoming agitated and inflammed, which causes a lot of pain. She said nothing can be done about that, but I can’t go on like this forever.

I had the same sort of symptoms as you, and from doing a stupid split, too! (I’m 19, so i know what you mean when you say the rest of your life is WAY too long to deal with this). The xray may not show everything – hips are very very complicated. Go see an orthopedist who specializes in hips. If he can’t tell anything either, ask for an MRI. He may even want to do an arthrogram, or arthroMRI, which is when they inject dye into your hip before the MRI. The contrast makes it easier to see tears, etc that they normally would miss. (for the record, the arthro is a pain in the butt, and will really really hurt your hip for at least 3 or 4 days afterward). Hopefully, you’ll be able to identify some kind of cause.

Just a thought – does your hip "pop" or snap? This could indicate a labral tear, which supposedly can be fixed with surgery (i’m debating having it done. we’ll see.) That could be your problem – i fell during a split two or three years ago and the pain would go away and suddenly come back with months in between. Regardless, have it checked out by someone who specializes in hips. Get second opinions! And don’t stop looking for an answer until you’re satisfied!

Okay it is probably a nerve being pinched in your back. You need to go see a chiropractic doctor and have him adjust your back and hips. That is the best thing to do. MD’s don’t understand and believe in Chiro doctors but they do work. You are probably way out of alignment like a bad car wreck.

You should talk to your doctor. It sounds like you may have problems with your spine that need to be addressed. If the pain is your hip joint, you’ll feel it more in your groin area, while if it is due to pressure on a nerve in the SI joint area, you’ll feel it it the top part of your butt/outside hip area.

There are many ways of treating injuries, all of which have value. Firstly, though, I would suggest that you get a correct diagnosis of the problem whether it is from a chiropractor, an osteopath or a GP. It may be an idea to ask your GP to refer you to an orthopaedic specialist who can do more extensive tests as well as x-rays.

You don’t say how young you were when this started – it could just possibly be a congenital condition which is not necessarily hereditary. You are very young to suffer this and it is important that you are enabled to lead as normal and fulfilled life as possible. Pain control can be achieved in many ways and may sometimes need a combination of different treatments. Do seek a second or even third opinion – it will be worth it.

Something which may also be useful – keep a daily medical diary so that when you see your GP or other consultant you can give them an overall picture of what is happening over a period of time.

    Good luck.
