There are many people who feel that Arthritis can be caused or aggravated by exercise. Nothing could be further from the truth. This old wive’s tale has been spread for many years.
There are many studies which you can research on the Internet that indicate that exercise actually benefits and helps reduce the symptoms of arthritis. Arthritis is mainly a genetic disease. If one is predisposed to getting arthritis, they will experience arthritis later in life whether they have exercised a lot or not.
Serious running does not cause arthritis. This is a misconception promoted by even some physicians. There have been long-term studies which followed hundreds of runners through 15-20 years of their running career. It was a balanced blind study which also followed non runners for the same amount of time. The study actually showed that the runners suffered less from arthritis symptoms later in life than did the non runners.
This is an indication that exercise does not in fact cause arthritis. Arthritis is caused by a degeneration of the cartilage within the joint tissue. Again this is brought about by age and is also influenced by genetics. People who are not predisposed to the disease will not suffer from the disease as much as others regardless of the amount of exercise they participate in.
Actually exercise, especially running, can create stronger bones and stronger and better joint health. Always check with your doctor before beginning an exercise routine, but rest assured that exercise will not bring about arthritis later in life.
