I’ve been having a lot of pain in my right hip and its been shooting down to me leg at the same time. Its like a dull pain and ive had it for several weeks. My doctor will not do anything for me or tell me how i might fix it, so i don’t bother going to any doctor now unless im on my death bed. I have Arthritis in my knee. i use to do a lot of weight lifting. don’t know if that might have anything to do with it over time.

There is a muscle, called the Piriformis (which means pear shaped), that attaches to the sacrum and crosses the buttocks to the greater trochanter which is the hip joint. This muscles rotates the hip outward, moves the leg to the side when the hip is flexed (as in getting in or out of a car), and holds the top of the leg bone (femur) in the hip socket.
In many people, the sciatic nerve passes through this muscle. When this muscle is over worked, injured, or in spasm, it can compress the sciatic nerve causing pain in the buttocks and/or down back of the leg.
Massage can help to relax the muscle which reduces or eliminates the pain. You can strengthen the piriformis by doing isometric contraction of the buttocks while standing. You can stretch it by laying on your back, crossing one ankle over the other knee and slowly bringing the knee towards the shoulder of the same side, keeping the sacrum or tail bone on the ground/floor. Be careful not to strain the knee joint. Or sit on the floor with one leg straight, bend the other up, holding it along the lower leg with both hands/arms gently pulling it toward the chest.
Avoid sitting on a wallet, sitting with legs crossed, and be aware of the position of your foot while driving. Eat foods high in potassium (such as banana) which in a natural muscle relaxer.
That is coming from your sciatic nerve. You may have stretched it out of wack by lifting, or you may think this is silly, if you are a man, do you carry your wallet in your back right pocket? If you do, try leaving it out of your back pockets and see if that helps, especially if you do a lot of sitting like driving or watching TV or on the computer. Apply ice or if it feels better apply moist heat to that right hip. Hope this helps.
