Non-steroidals (NSAIDS) are used by many to relieve osteoarthritis pain. Many of them can be purchased over the counter (without a prescription). Examples: Advil, aspirin, Aleve. They usually work best if you take them on a regular basis. A caution: do not go on a regular regimen of NSAIDS without your doctor’s knowledge and advice re: dosage.
This is what I did before I had both of my hips replaced. I took Aleve for 4 years. It helped a lot for the first 3 years. When I was still in pain and couldn’t walk very well, I began planning for hip replacement surgery.

I’ve heard of a lot of people using acupuncture to relieve arthritis pain. I’ve never had acupuncture, but the people who get it done at the place I work seem to be pleased.
Massage on the other hand (my speciality) helps a lot too. Many of my clients come to me with arthritis pain in their joints and find massage leaves them with much relief. The best part is you don’t have to necessarily pay $60+ each time you go to your licensed massage therapist, sometimes they can work on you for just a few minutes at a time meaning your cost is a lot less. Just ask your LMT what they can do to cater to your needs. A spa probably won’t negotiate with you on price, nor would one of those fancy schmancy places that just do massage (Massage Envy, Massage Luxe, etc), but if you can find a LMT that runs their own show, this may be the best option. Check out http://www.massagetherapy.com or http://www.amtamassage.org. They can assist you in finding a Licensed Massage Therapist in your area as opposed to going massage shop to masage shop looking for someone to meet your needs.
Hope this helps
