Yep, I feel the same way. I take thyroxine as I have a non-functioning thyroid after Graves Disease, and the symptoms seem to mimic thyroid underactivity. I realised too late that the increase in mucus at the cervix also seems to increase in other parts of my body, which is why as well as really painful joints, I am thick-headed, slightly breathless and have a permanently stuff up swollen nose.

Message for Zandra Jones
just read your post dated March 10th 2010, i know its a year ago!! but you said you were going to have the Mirena taken out, i just wondered if your joint/hip pain has now gone? I too am having the same problems and my Chiropractor is advising me to have it removed, just wondered if it had helped you? would appreciate a reply.
Thank you.

I have been suffering from extreme joint pain, mostly in my knees and hips, but also my arms, legs and hands ache. I have been through every test you can think of and everything comes back negative or "normal"
Thinking back, everything started about 6 months after getting the mirena. My first side effects were extreme pain in my pelvic area which was caused by a cyst, from the mirena, I now have another cyst from it. I am having the mirena removed as soon as i can.

In reply to Zandra Jones.I too had a Mirena fitted Jan 2009 to stop heavy periods. Almost immediately my legs felt heavy, achy and swollen. I put it down to side effects from the general anaesthetic, but they didn't go away. I feel that the symptoms flare up at what would be my monthly period, although bleeding stopped some months ago. The symtoms, which effect mainly my thighs and knees, have been linked by the doctor to the arthritis that I already had in one knee. But like you I feel that they are linked to the Mirena. I have seen lots of anidotal evidence that others have had similar symptoms but nothing on official medical research. I don't want a return to the repeated anemia I suffered from but if removing the Mirena gives me back my mobility it will be worth it. It's still early days since you had your's removed but please keep me posted on your symptoms. I do hope things improve for you.

You answered one of my questions:)

I, too, have experienced joint pain. Mostly from my pregnancy which was tendinitis, but more recently, knees, elbows and wrists. I visited my doctor and he gave me a cortisone injection which did work. I still have joint pain now and again, but induced from exercise.
There are several symptoms I have, presumably from the mirena, but nothing I can't live with. Your pain sounds like mine which was diagnosed as bursitis which is an inflammation of the bursa sac that lubricated the joints. I have suffered from this since I was a teenager. I guess your best bet is to visit your doctor.

BTW, thanks for you answer:)
