Arthritis of the knee in a 30 year old.?
I’m 30 years old and about 30 pounds over weight and in the last few months been experiencing knee pain while walking as exercise. I walk an average of 5-6 days a week. I come from a family where both sides have knee arthritis. My question is, am I to young to already be getting arthritis? and what should I do besides the obvious which I am trying to do which is lose weight to prevent anymore damage to my knees? I don’t have insurance at the moment so going to the doctor isn’t possible, looking for tips and info I can try from home thanks.
DJ answers:
Arthritis can occur at any age actually. It is something that gets worse and can cause damage if left untreated. To manage pain naproxen and ibuprofen are available over the counter. It is also super important to stay active (losing weight would seriously help a lot) and eating healthy doesn’t hurt. Hot and cold compressed help also. Check out this blog http://makearthritisstophurting.tumblr.com/ for support. Also google the arthritis foundation and check out their website for info and treatment tips. They even offer free programs to help keep you healthy and learn about arthritis.

My knee locks in place?
I have juvenile arthritis, and I’m 13. My knee seems to lock in place a lot – I’ve done what the physiotherapists have told me to, with exercised to keep them strong. But they don’t seem to work? Anyway, my knee locks in place when it’s bent for too long, and stiffens when I try to move it. Its relatively painful and I want to know why its hurting so much, as it never used to. Thanks
DJ answers:
Well you have arthritis symptoms so you should see your rheumatologist and talk about changing your medication or other options you have.

I have the same problem. It is just a part of getting older. Just put ice on it at night after work and don’t be freaked out. My doctor told me it is completely normal for that noise.

Linda asks…
What’s Wrong with My Knee?
I’m an 18 year old male college student. I haven’t really done anything that I believe should have caused any knee problems. My lifestyle at college, however, is very unhealthy. I don’t do any physical exercise other than walking from my dorm to class or wherever I need to go. The junk food here significantly outweighs the healthy food, and I generally eat burgers, pizza and ice cream and drink soda, juice, or sometimes chocolate milk. I also hardly drink water and get little sleep, often pulling all nighters to get work done or study for exams. Recently I’ve started taking multivitamins daily (Centrum multivitamin).
The knee problem I’ve specifically noticed is that sometimes (not often) when I run up the stairs 2 at a time or even once when I was just walking down the stairs 1 at a time, there is a click in my right knee and an abrupt, sharp pain that lasts for about 3 seconds. I’m not sure why this happens, but that doesn’t sound normal at all, especially at this young age. I did run on the treadmill in the past, which used to cause my knees soreness, and I did do some on-and-off weightlifting in my later years in high school, although I’m not sure if any of that would have caused my current knee problem.
Any idea what’s happening? Do I have arthritis? I’m thinking of getting a glucosamine and chondroitin supplement from The Vitamin Shoppe.
DJ answers:
There are many possible causes for a clicking knee, some of which are potentially serious and troubling, and others which really aren’t a serious problem. To decide which camp your knee difficulties fall into you need to look at the other symptoms that occur along with your clicking and to see if it responds to some gentle treatment of your own.
If it sounds more like a pop, then there may be nothing to worry about. Popping and snapping within the knee is quite common, and often not a symptom of any particular problem. When the pops or snaps are painless, there is usually no problem–the bigger concern is when these sounds are associated with pain. A pop is often heard or felt when a ligament, such as the ACL, is torn.
If the noise is more of a crunching or scraping noise then this might be the result of your bones grinding against each other. If this is the case then you should be concerned and see a doctor as it can otherwise cause erosion and lead to arthritis.

DJ answers:
First, thanks for being honest. I think we’ve all had stretches where we weren’t exactly healthy. When you ran on the treadmill in the past, was the pain the same? I assume you haven’t seen a doctor about this yet?
Going up stairs 2 at a time is a pretty explosive movement. Short, but explosive. If you’re fairly sedentary, the ligaments aren’t really used to that so you’re probably straining one. I wouldn’t think arthritis yet, but there’s a small possibility. Very small really. The fact that the pain goes away after a few seconds hints that it’s not a tear. Any bruising or swelling? Does it feel loose at all?
It wouldn’t hurt to go get checked by a doctor. That way you can point to exactly where it hurts, they can test range of motion, etc.. I would think strain/small tear before arthritis though.
