Does anyone know how to relieve chronic back pain due to inflammation and arthritis?
I have tried OTC arthritis pain meds they don’t offer much relief for me. I have had surgery for herniated disc. My doctor says that there is a lot of inflamation and arthritis in my back. You can’t get Vioxx anymore. Is there an alternative?
DJ answers:
Ice works better than any anti inflammatory for inflammation. Apply ice for 10 min, then off for 10 min, back and forth. Naproxen would be the next thing if you don’t want ice. Exercise is the best treatment for arthritis, as pain gets worse if your muscles are stiff. I would recommend going for walks. Some pools have arthritis programs to do water aerobics that are special for arthritis. There are other meds you can take, such as Celebrex. Hope this helps, God Bless

William asks…
I have arthritis at the base of my thumb where it connects to my wrist. Any ideas on pain relief?
Just wondering if anyone has a home remedy or an OTC remedy that might be worth trying.
DJ answers:
You can take over the counter anti-inflammatories (as long as you don’t have asthma, stomach ulcers or inflammatory bowel disease). Naproxen or Ibuprofen are both good. Check with your pharmacist that it’s ok for you to take them.
You might also like to try ice and heat. If it gets hot and swollen, put ice on it. Don’t put heat on it if it’s already hot.
There are also anti-inflammatory creams/gels. You can use these if you have asthma and stomach problems.
Your doctor will have more recommendations.

Sandy asks…
Chronic Pain need help?
I have been seeing my doctor for just about 1 year for chronic pain. I have morning stiffness, headaches, joint swelling/stiffness, pain in joints, shoulder pain, back pain including lower back, my bones crack all day like I am just a skeleton. I concider myself somewhat healthy eat well have a 1 year old that I play with so I get lots of exercise.
My proplem is this:
There is no diagnosis! Doc says that I have ANA Blood but no R factor. I have had MRIs and Xrays done both showing arthritis in my joints, back, and tailbone. I live in pain all day everyday and tylonal and other otc dont work. I can’t take anti inflammatories because there really mess up my stomach. I was put on Ultram/tremadol for about 6 months. I told the doctor 3 times that they werent working that great and she said that is the only thing she can give me at this time since the rhuematoidalogist would be seeing me soon. Which by the way took 4 months to get into thuematoid office due to medical coverage. Well, I seen the rhuematoidalogist and he says that there isnt anything that he sees to shed any light on what is wrong with me. That was 2 months ago. Since then I started to take way to many ultram I was taking about 10-12 a day. I said to myself that that was rediculus so I talked to my doctor and sooo she puts me on Zannaflex, zoloft, and tylanol arthritis.
The zannaflex was one of the first meds she tried me on when I first started to see her. They didn’t work then nor do they help now. I am not really depressed so I don’t know why she puts me on zoloft. And I came into her office taking tylanol for my pain with no relief……I also have to say that before I seen her I was getting Vicodin from a friend. know that it is ilegal to take someone elses meds but with no insurance a new baby and in so much pain what does one do. I took 2-3 at the most a day with excellent relief. I never once abused them I never got “high” off from then. I told my doctor that I had been using them since I believe that you should tell your doc everything be upfront and honest. She looked at me like I was a criminal. And said “well, they probably worked to good and you will not get them here” So here I am over a year later with no answers to my condition being treated for depression and muscle pain with no relief. I have been nothing but honest with her. If I was out to get “Drugs” I would have been out of her office a long time ago . I just want help and don’t know what to do I feel she doesnt even try to listen to me….Oh she also checked me for Hepititis C 4 times because I am sleeved out with tattoos. And one more thing that she told me once when she first put me on Zannaflex I told her that I couldnt take a med that would make me tired because at that time my daughter was 6 months old and starting to pull up on everything….She looked at me and asks “Well do you have a Playpen?”
So, I am wondering what you all think I should do? I want a second opionion but I have no insurance and this doctor is covered through the state. But I have had so much lab work done xrays MRIs I just don’t want to go through it all over again. I am just lost on what I should do……
Sorry to write a misspelled book but I wanted to share all the details
the nurse did say something about Fybromyalgia yesterday when I talked with her….Also, My great grandma had Rhuematoid artritis as well as my great aunt…..I have all the signs and syptoms just my blood work says differant. Even the doctor thinks it is the on set of RA. I have had terrible problems with my wrist since I was around 12 years old just flared up in high geer since I gave birth..
DJ answers:
First things first. Joints that crack all day is not Arthritis. Morning stiffness, how long does it last for? What I mean is, if you wake up like the Tin Man from the Wizard of Oz and cannot do anything, let alone see to your child for two hours, then you have morning stiffness. However if you wake up and within the hour have breakfast ready, this is normal. RA factor is negative, but you have ANA, did not say what the count was? Many people can have various factors in their blood, but over a certain amount, in line with symptoms would suggest different form of Arthritis. X-rays, MRI probably too early to see any change. Therefore at the moment this is pointing to Fybromyalgia and pain killers are not the correct treatment for this condition. So you need to see a Doctor, get to see a Rheumatologist as see if it is Fibromyalgia. Likewise read up about Fibromyalgia, see if the symptoms fit. Best of Luck

Paul asks…
Where do you go when you’ve been labelled ‘difficult’ by doctors….the vet??
I think I have “Elaine from Seinfeld Syndrome”…
I’ve had strange unexplained hip joint problems for the last 3 years, and feel like every doctor has given up on me. The problem is getting worse, changing all the time, I have a hard time walking, I’m in constant pain, the pain is moving to my other joints, wrists, fingers, knees, and now I’m getting weird nerve sensations in my thighs, like waves of goosebumps or like when your foot falls asleep.
They say they can’t help me because they don’t know what’s wrong. Every test comes up normal, even x-rays, bone scans and mri didn’t show abnormalities. I don’t have arthritis, I don’t have bursitis, I don’t have osteoporosis, it’s not diabetes, it’s not a thyroid problem, not a nerve problem. They look at me like I’m pretending, like I’m making it all up and wasting their time, they cut me off before I’m finished explaining what I’m feeling, and I leave no further ahead, they won’t even give me anything for pain because they don’t know what they’re dealing with, and regular otc drugs don’t even touch it. I don’t know where to go now, who to turn to. I’ve thought about giving up trying, but the pain I feel daily reminds me that this is not going to go away, and I am desperate for relief, so I keep trying.
I’m not in a financial position to try alternative therapies, although I did try acupuncture, acupressure, deep tissue massage and physiotherapy out of desperation. None have helped with anything except making my wallet lighter.
hmmm….guess I’ve been labelled ‘difficult’ by answerers too…just my luck.
DJ answers:
I would not label you as “difficult”, it is just hard to answer the question when you don’t know the answer. I fought with doctors for 2 years after they gave up on my grandma (I was her caregiver). I kept her alive for four years after they stopped trying to fix her.
Unfortunately, the answer to your question is in your question. No insurance, no money, no treatment. It isn’t right. I don’t know how to fix it. I know with problems like this sometimes you have to give up on finding the cause and just go with a treatment plan that gives you the best quality of life. Go to your regular doctor and ask for a referal to a pain management clinic.
Good Luck and my prayers are with you!
