Signs my GSD will go into true labor?
My German Shepherd was bred successfully on November 12, 2010. Today is January 9, 2011, making it 59 days of her being pregnant. She is definitely pregnant, and she is showing obvious signs of pre-labor. My breeding Mentor, is being unreliable. Not giving me straight answers, and what not. She has a temperature of 98.0 F that has been the same all day. She is having contractions, and the puppies are kicking. She tends to sleep more, and nest. Will not eat food, or drink her water. When i let her out to go potty, she tried emptying her bowels, and ended up with a long string of clear, thick discharge. that she later ate. Her contractions are getting worse as i type this, making her whine even louder than before. She is also Obviously uncomfortable, squirming around and walking in circles. She is in her whelping box now. And is asleep. ALL answers appreciated.
DJ answers:
She shouldn’t be whining while having contractions and she sure as hell wouldn’t be sleeping until the entire litter was whelped and all the pups accounted for. You didn’t say exactly how long she’s been having contractions, but if it’s been more than two hours, AND because she was whining, the first pup may be too large to pass. Take her to the Vet. It sounds like something IS wrong…..AND don’t take her outside to go to the bathroom without a scissors and towel in hand.

My dog is 62 days pregnant and still no sign of labour?
She is a German Shepherd and had diarrhea for 2 days (wed & Thurs). I phoned my vet and he says it sounded like she was getting ready to go and if she still hadn’t went by Wed 22nd to call him again. Her belly has really dropped and she is licking herself now and again but nothing out of the ordinary. She is still eating like a horse and quite lively. I am not asking for tips on how to put her into labour as this is for nature and a vet to deal with if and when the time comes. I have her whelping box and all ready which she has taking to very well. I am in constant contact with my vet but he says every dog is different which i know so im just wondering if anyone elses dog has went around time or late etc. Not really looking for advice just other peoples experience, thanks
Also have spoken to my breed mentor as well who again has told me every dog is different but if u read the question i dont want smart answers im just asking for others experiences, people who have actually whelped pups before!!
In relation to ‘true beauty’ read the question not whining, looking for other peoples experiences and maybe try to have somewhat of a conversation with other genuine people. I dont need anyones advice apart from my vet and mentor so please read the question before answering
DJ answers:
They do need to be calm and comfortable in what they regard as a ‘safe nest’ so don’t hassle her. It is normal to be 2 or 3 days late. Phone your mentor and ask what signs to look for that might indicate your dog may be getting into problems that need a vet’s intervention urgently.
Breeding dogs is seldom just a matter of letting nature take its course.

Sandy asks…
can you give me any advice on dog labour?
my german shepherd is 57 days pregnant. I posted a question earlier but all i got was abuse from people. Basically she has been panting for a few days. We think she lost her mucous plug but when we spoke to the vet he told us that dogs don’t have a mucous plug? But we have done quite alot of research about the pregnancy and this says they will lose their mucous plug. So were a bit confused. The vet said by what we said that she is probably in the early stages of labour. She wont let us take her temperature and we don’t want to force her so were going from other signs. She also had a clear stringy discharge from her vagina today. What does this mean? Please don’t give me abuse and call me a back yard breader cos i don’t want to hear it. I’m just asking for some friendly advice.
we took her to the vet this morning and he checked her over and said that she’s fine. She’s not in labour. And he thinks that she will probably go into labour over next weekend. Thanks for your advice apart from all the ignorant people.
DJ answers:
Ask a vet and a breeder, and after spay your dog.

Why is our pregnant dog panting?
We have a German Shepherd who is pregnant. This is her second litter but her first with us. We are expecting the puppies in about 12 days. However, today she has started following me around more than usual. She is also panting alot. I know this is a sign of labor but she shouldnt be having her pups yet. She was with our male before we saw them mate…but would they mate again if she was already pregnant? I am just worried that there is something wrong. She is eating as normal. We have the whelping box ready, but she isnt in it…she is just following me. If you have any ideas of what could be going on please let me know!
DJ answers:
You never know, is she digging a sure sign is nesting (Digging) Also you need to take her temperature if it has dropped to 98-98.3 then you are going to have puppies in the next 48 hours. Normal 101. Sometimes they wont go in the box with out being made to. My last liter my girl would not go into the box until about 1 hour before puppies came.

Lisa asks…
I think my dog is in labor!?
Shes a 2yr old German Shepherd and shes pregnant with her first litter. When I took her temp this morning it was 97.8. She hasn’t showed many signs of labor other than some light nesting. All she wants to do is sleep. Does this sound like labor?
DJ answers:
What did your breeding mentor say when you asked her?
