Some people are under the misconception that there are many causes of rheumatoid arthritis; but that isn’t really the case. There may be many REASONS for developing this disease, but that is completely different from what is actually causing the rheumatoid arthritis pain. The causes of rheumatoid arthritis are, in truth, ONE singular thing — which is the immune system suddenly going, for lack of a better word, haywire.

What happens is the immune system for some reason or another targets the membranes of your joints as a threat. The membranes surrounding these joints (known as synovium) react to this attack and “defend” themselves. They do this by becoming thicker and more resilient with each attack. This may sound good, but it is not in the least bit — as any RA sufferer will tell you.

As this membrane gets thicker & thicker, it starts to actually DESTROY both bone and cartilage in the joint. As these are slowly, yet surely ravaged over time, tendons and ligaments within the area will begin to become stretched and weakened as well. The longer this goes on, the more & more the joint gets out of its proper alignment. As the joints alignment gets further and further “out of whack”, pain, discomfort, and decreased mobility begin to make their appearances.

There are many theories as to the causes of rheumatoid arthritis and why these immune system “attacks” might be happening. Bacteria, fungi, viruses, and even underlying illnesses (those of which affect the immune system) are some of the ideas that are being thrown around. Unfortunately, none of these ideas or theories are 100% proven, so it’s more speculation than anything else.

Risk Factors of Developing Rheumatoid Arthritis…

Your Gender: Statistics show that women are far more likely than men to develop RA as they get older.

Age: Rheumatoid arthritis most often strikes between the ages of 40 and 60, so it’s well advised to take extra precautions — such as the right preventative treatments — during these years. However, RA is not unheard of in people outside that age bracket; be it younger or older.

Genetics: If RA runs in your family, then you have a DRAMATICALLY increased chance of developing this joint disease. The good news (if you can call it that) is that the disease itself won’t be passed on directly to you — you’ll just be predisposed to it rather than “guaranteed” to have it.
