Cat’s Claw (uncaria tomentosa) can be beneficial against arthritis because of its many properties. Find out what these health benefits are and why it’s useful against the common form of arthritis.
This herb is also commonly referred to as ‘una de gato’ by Spanish-speaking countries; by the medical profession or alternative medicine specialists it is also referred as ‘uncaria tomentosa’ or as ‘uncaria guaianensis’. For the purpose of this article I will call it ‘Uncaria’.
When we suffer from this degenerative disease we can feel like nothing’s helping. For this reason, becoming knowledgeable about the many natural remedies we can take to relieve the symptoms, decrease the disease’s damaging effects and sooth the pain, is very important. In this article I will highlight the various benefits of uncaria, since some of them are particularly relevant to arthritic problems.
— Antioxidant properties. Antioxidants fight the damaging effect of free radicals throughout the body and in the joints affected by arthritic conditions in particular. Free radicals arise normally during metabolism, or the natural ageing process, or whilst the body tries to combat viruses and bacteria; the ‘spawning’ of many free radicals is also triggered (in huge quantities) by pollution, cigarette smoke, pesticides and herbicides as well as radiation. Free radicals attack the nearest stable molecule which (simplistically put) then becomes a free radical itself, thus creating a chain reaction which eventually disrupts the living cell. The body can cope with a ‘normal’ level of free radicals. However, we are surrounded by triggering factors and this is a constant ‘strain’ on the body, which can only produce a limited amount of ‘antioxidant defense’; when arthritic conditions set in, the joint becomes damaged and, if your body is ‘strained’ already (as it often is), it cannot repair the damage enough or at all. Antioxidants help the body repair (at least partially) the damaged joints.
— Anti-inflammatory properties. Because of uncaria’s property to ease inflammation, it is useful against common arthritic states (affecting any joint) and other inflammatory conditions. Reducing inflammation is very important not only to remove the pain and stiffness but also to decrease the level of ‘stress’ caused to the whole body. If untreated, inflammation can cause damage not only to joints but to other areas of the body, including the lungs and the heart.
— Anti-neoplastic (prevents and inhibits the formation of neoplasms, which may become malignant; for this reasons it is thought to be useful against several forms of cancer, for example)
— Anti-mutagenic (inhibits genetic/DNA mutations; for example, excessive radiation increases the rate of mutation, eventually causing cancer; an anti-mutagenic works against the degenerative effects of mutagens such as radiation, pollution, smoke or even genetic tendencies).
