Korzen has suffered from rheumatoid arthritis in all her joints since she was 19 years old and has had years of knee pain and two prior knee surgeries. Her second surgery was for tearing her meniscus in 2009, and since then she has been unable to participate in normal daily activities like walking, swimming and climbing stars without experiencing extreme pain. To address this continued knee pain, Korzen met with Dr. Meisles to discuss alternative surgical options that could put an end to her continuous debilitating pain.
Dr. Meisles suggested Korzen try a procedure using a personalized partial knee resurfacing device from ConforMIS, a medical device company that develops and manufactures personalized partial knee implants. Korzen was an ideal candidate for the iDuo a bone-sparing alternative to traditional total knee replacement in patients whose arthritic damage is limited to just one or two compartments of the knee, and opted to have the procedure done on her left knee. The iDuo resurfaces only the affected areas of the knee, preserving far more bone on both the femur and tibia, than traditional total knee replacement surgery. The manufacturer of the implants, ConforMIS, Inc., has developed a full line of implants that are designed to treat all stages of osteoarthritis, including the iUni unicompartmental knee resurfacing implant and the iDuo. These implants are developed utilizing a computer modeling system and software to extract individual and anatomic information from CT images. This ‘image-to-implant’ technology provides a 3D image of the knee which is used to design and manufacture a personalized implant that conforms to the exact shape and size of the individual patient.
