Orthopedic beds are very popular for people that have some kind of musculoskeletal condition, or mobility issue. Resting on a regular bed can cause anything from mild discomfort to intense pain if you have very sensitive areas on your body due to some kind of musculoskeletal condition. Or if you are suffering from mobility issues, it can put an unnecessary amount of strain on your body to have to try to lay on and adjust yourself on a regular mattress.

The spine is naturally shaped in an “S” like form. Regular mattresses are flat, they do not take this into account, and for the average user this is not a problem. The mattresses found on orthopedic beds however, do need to take this into account and these beds will typically feature a memory foam mattress or latex foam mattress. These mattresses have the ability to mould to the natural shape of the body, which helps to alleviate any discomfort or pain that would be felt by sleeping on a regular mattress. Memory foam or latex foam mattresses also have a longer life span than regular mattresses, lasting up to 20 years as opposed to 5-10 years.

Having a mattress that can conform to the natural shape of your spine is essential, not just for a more comfortable resting experience, but also for a fuller sleeping experience. In selecting your bed, you will want to think about your budget. There are features with associated price tags to fit a range of budgets.

There are two main categories of orthopedic bed, those that are not adjustable, and those that are. The non-adjustable orthopedic beds will come with a flat base that supports an orthopedic mattress. The adjustable beds, as the name suggests will have an adjustable base which enables you to adjust the bed and mattress to provide the desired level of support to the major areas of your body, from head to foot. If your budget permits, you can also get adjustable beds that feature heat therapy and massage features.

Also, adjustable beds come in two different types. There are manual adjustable beds, and there are electric adjustable beds. The manual adjustable beds like the name suggests, will require somebody to manually adjust the configurable parts of the bed. An electric adjustable bed offers convenience through the ability to adjust the bed automatically via a remote control. Again it will depend on the needs of the user and their budget as to which of these two types they go for.

Another main consideration to take into account is of course the mattress that comes with the bed, or that you will buy separately for the bed. Memory foam mattresses are the most popular and in demand type of orthopedic mattress, as they have the ability to adjust and mold around the body without providing the resistance that comes from sleeping on a regular spring coil mattress.

Another popular mattress type is latex foam mattress, latex foam mattresses are similar to memory foam mattresses, except they are made from latex foam, and so derived from a natural source, which some people prefer to memory foam. Additionally latex foam is naturally better at handling the heat that accumulates from the body of the person resting on the mattress. Although that said, memory foam innovations have been made to address this problem with memory foam mattresses.

An orthopedic bed and mattress can be expensive, but knowing what your budget is and what features you need should help you to find one that best fits your needs and enabled you to have a more comfortable and better quality night’s sleep.
