Garringer specializes in shoulders, Lemme concentrates on knees and they both work on hips and other parts of the body. Back and neck surgery is referred to Dr. Michael Coscia in ReNovo Spine Clinic.
The surgeons said they believe it is important for the community to understand what they can do to help patients with their pain issues, and they are sponsoring several community education events.
Lemme recently hosted a free seminar on total hip and knee replacement at the ReNovo Center that was attended by 30 people interested in finding out more about their options, and Garringer is holding a seminar on total shoulder replacement at 6 p.m. Sept. 15 at ReNovo.
“People have a lot of questions,” Lemme said. “For the baby boomers, arthritis is an issue, and many people have abused their bodies. Also, people are living longer, and there is just more wear and tear on joints.”
Lemme was quick to add that surgery is not the only option in relieving pain. Physical therapy can strengthen the muscles around the joint to make moving less painful, and synthetic joint fluid injections can also make the pain more tolerable. Lemme is especially excited about a new product called Signature Knee that uses a computer in combination with an MRI scan to make the operation more precise.
Garringer said advances in medical technology have improved joint replacements and can make an immediate improvement in a patient’s quality of life.
“I like orthopedics because there is an instant gratification when you can take away someone’s pain through surgery,” he said. “There will be pain connected with recovering from the surgery, but the joint pain will be gone.”
Each patient is different when it comes to deciding when to take steps to relieve pain.
“When the pain starts to stop people from doing what they like to do or when someone can’t work or make a living, they are usually ready,” Lemme said. “You don’t have to live with the pain.”
